Pope Innocent IV writes to the king of England noting the king’s request that the king of Scotland not be anointed or crowned without his consent, since he is his liegeman and has done him homage. Because the apostolic see is but little accustomed to admit requests of this king, the king must not be surprised if the pope has not hearkened to him in this matter, for he would not make a grant to anybody which might tend to prejudice the royal dignity. Concerning the king’s request for a tenth of ecclesiastical revenues in his kingdom, the pope has not granted it because it is altogether unheard of that any ruler should be granted this privilege within the kingdom of another sovereign.
