Document 2/143/4 (Dip. Norv., vii, no. 28)
- Description
- Pope Innocent IV writes to [Walter de Gray], archbishop of York noting the petition of the abbot and convent of the monastery of Furness that although they – having the right of electing a bishop for the church of Man – select a suitable person for its pastor, because it is required that the bishop-elect – whom the archbishop of York or the archbishop of Nidaros is accustomed to consecrating – to undertake a perilous passage by sea at unavoidable inconvenience when he goes to receive consecration, they scarcely find any one who will accept his election, chiefly because the church of Nidaros is very remote from the church of Man; thus, the church suffers detriment. The pope therefore requests the archbishop of York that, with the assent of the archbishop of Nidaros, to find that the election presented to him has been canonically celebrated and a fit person selected, and to establish it and not delay the right of consecration.
