Document 2/143/36 (Newb. Reg., no. 225)
- Description
- Pope Innocent IV writes to the prelates of the Church concerning the tribulations suffered by the abbot and brethren of Newbattle. He thus commands and instructs that those who shall invade the possessions, whether things or houses, of the said brethren or their men, or who shall detain them unjustly, against the indult of the apostolic see, or presume to promulgate a sentence of excommunication or interdict, or to extort teinds, the addressees may strike them with sentence of excommunication. If they are clerics, canons or monks, they may suspend them from office and benefice without appeal until they make satisfaction to the said brothers. Laymen or secular clergy who come to the apostolic see with letters of the diocesan bishop, may merit absolution. The addressees may place under sentence of interdict the villas in which goods of the said brethren or their men are detained through violence.
