Document 2/137/82 (Glas. Reg., no. 110)
- Description
- Pope Innocent III writes to everyone in the province of York and the kingdom of Scotland, stating that he has heard that a certain destructive custom – which should rather be called corrupting, being against the rights and integrity of the church – growing within the realms of England and Scotland from antiquity until now, and is still existing through abuse, namely, that if a bishop or abbot or any cleric happens to be challenged for an offence for which a duel between laymen is called, however much a cleric he may be, he is compelled to undergo the duel personally. Therefore, the pope, detesting the custom as offensive to God and the sacred canons, commands by the authority of these present [letters] under pain of anathema that none shall undertake this custom. Let no person infringe or contravene with reckless audacity the same. If any one shall do so, he will incur the wrath of God and of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul.
