Document 2/131/51 (Haddan and Stubbs, Councils, ii, I, 254)
- Description
- Pope Alexander III writes to the prelates of the churches in Scotland, noting that he has been informed that when Hugh, who invaded the church of St Andrews, unlawfully retained the episcopal insignia [the staff and ring and the capellam episcopalem] which he had carried away, the sub-deacon Alexis, papal legate, ordered in the presence of the prelates and a multitude of clergy and people that unless either the items were returned or appropriate satisfaction was made within fifteen days, Hugh would be excommunicated by apostolic authority. He has refused to comply. Alexander thus ratifies the legatine sentence, commanding that Hugh’s excommunication should be proclaimed publicly without fear until restitution is made to Bishop John of St Andrews and to that church.
