Document 2/128/3 (St A. Lib., 48-50)
- Description
- Pope Eugene III writes to Robert, prior of St Andrews, taking the church into his protection. He sets up that Augustinian order which Robert, his bishop, instituted and all the possessions and goods which they have or may acquire by papal permission, by the liberality of kings or the gifts of the faithful, may remain with the prior and his successors, including the right to choose bishops when there is no one in the bishop’s seat with the common consent of the brethren, and ordering that as the céli De die they are to be replaced by regular canons. The pope directs that no man is permitted to disturb the church or carry away its possessions; saving to the bishop canonical justice and reverence and the authority of the apostolic see. Should any secular person attempt to go against this, after three warnings if he should not make amends, he may lose his honour and be liable to divine justice, and subject himself to retribution.
