Document 2/133/15 (Newb. Reg., no. 261)
- Description
- Pope Urban III writes to the abbot of Cîteaux and all the abbots of the Cistercian order, noting the apostolic see’s constant support for that order. The Cistercians have always wished to be obedient to the teaching authority of bishops, but the see had protected the monks so that no one can promulgate ecclesiastical penalties against their monasteries or abbots, or excommunications, suspensions, or interdicts against persons in the order. But, charity having diminished, may prelates now transgress such rulings, and do not hesitate to render unjust punishment against the Cistercians. Following Pope Lucius, therefore, the pontiff orders that no one should promulgate, contrary to what is known to have been observed from the foundation of the order, excommunications, suspensions, or interdicts against these monasteries or the brothers therein. If such sentences have been pronounced, they should not hold.
