Roger de Quincy, earl of Winchester, constable of Scotland, has given, granted, and established by his present charter, to Nicholas of Clackmannan, brewer of the lord king of Scotland, for his homage and service, and for two marks which he gave Roger in ‘gersum’, the whole land of his constableship in Clackmannan (CLA), with all its pertinents in toft and in croft, in perpetuity. The same Nicholas shall build on that land nearest to the castle, one stable to accommodate 12 of the earl’s horses when they are being entertained there, and the same Nicholas shall also build, at the earl’s expense, with permission to cut wood, a chamber of 40 feet in length and 24 feet in width, with a ‘garderoba’ (either wardrobe or lavatory) and private chamber, which will similarly be for the earl’s use when he comes to get hospitality there, for an annual render of 4s, namely, 2s on Pentecost and 2s on Martinmas.
