Document 3/17/19 (Glas. Reg., no. 141)

Description
Maldoven, earl of Lennox, in the year of Grace, 1226, on the first Friday after the Epiphany, in the mother church of Glasgow, in the presence of Walter, bishop of Glasgow, and many others attending him, solemnly granted in his own faithfulness and in the faith owed to God and the Church, and resolutely promised that he will pay all his teinds and ecclesiastical dues to God and the church in full forever, namely, of corn, hay and multure, of wool and flax, of cheese and butter, of calves and lambs, of piglets and chickens, and of kids, and of all other things which the Christian law instructs should be given as teinds and ecclesiastical dues, just as they should well be paid elsewhere throughout the diocese of Glasgow; and these same teinds he shall cause with all his might to be given by all his men and tenants; and if they should be resistant or rebellious, he shall, with clerical advice, apply a helping hand. He has also granted that the clerks of Lennox shall not in future be weighed down with any taxes and exactions not owed. Supplies for the use of his servientes who are called kethres shall not be claimed by the said clerks. He has also granted that the same clerks should have common pasture throughout his whole land according to the traditions of the holy fathers and statutes of the Church, and rejoice in every ecclesiastical liberty. He has also granted that he will not seize the goods of the clergy as poinds for the laity, neither shall he allow them to be seized by any men under his authority.
