Document 1/20/1 (ESC, no. 16)

Description
William II, king of the English, to Thomas, archbishop of York; he gives notice that he has granted to the church of Durham and William the bishop lands in Lothian which King Edgar donated.
Firm date
29 August 1095 X October 1095
Dating Notes
Cf. 1/2/1. See also Duncan, 'Yes, the earliest Scottish Charters', 32-3. It would appear that William II was not at the assembly in Norham churchyard on 29 August 1095. Duncan suggests that Bishop William of Durham could have taken [*]559 to the king to obtain this royal confirmation.
