Document 2/7/69 (Pais. Reg., 15-7)
- Description
- William, bishop of Glasgow, writes to Stephen (sic for William), abbot of Cluny, noting that when late Humbald, prior, and convent of Wenlock had granted to Walter, son of Alan, steward of Scotland, that a religious house may be constructed on his own land, for many years it happened that all the monks were dying without making their profession which was against founder's intentions. Since said house, founded for more than eighty years, had sustained grave things detrimental to it for a long time, by apostolic authority, an abbot was created at request of Alexander, king of Scotland and Sir Walter, bishop of Glasgow. Bishop William notes also that thirteen years ago at Lyons, the creation of abbot at said house by canonical election was established with other co-bishops from Scotland versus Sir Hugh, predecessor of [William]. The bishop has remembered that said house was bound to monks of Cluny, by letters patent, for payment of 2 marks yearly at Pontefract in England, on feast of St Peter ad vincula. He thus prays to abbot and chapter of Cluny that an abbacy may be had in said house and that every seventh year after his election, the abbot may visit monastery of Cluny.
