Document 2/45/3 (Linc. Reg., iii, no. 839)
- Description
- Nicholas, dean and the chapter of Lincoln write to the abbot and convent of Holyrood, noting the letter which they sent to him by a certain Adam called ‘Straffri’ and Patrick, then the abbot’s messengers. By which letter, Nicholas understood that the abbot asserted that Walter of Shelfanger, clerk, who from the church of Paxton, which is subject to a pension to Holyrood, was wont to receive 100s., had died; nevertheless, the abbot offered to sell to them the yearly pension of 20 marks, due from the chapter’s hands to Holyrood and the same W., for 200 marks. For this, Nicholas and the chapter returned their thanks and begged that the abbot would now, by a title of sale, grant the said pension for 200 marks even if the said W. had died. The dean and chapter fully admitted the charge of making good to the said W., if he still survives, the 100s. a year from the aforesaid church or otherwise doing what is acceptable to him. If the abbot and convent are willing to accept this, they should not delay to send a transcript of the letter which they have about the advowson or patronage of the said church and all the muniments which they have about such pension, and also the form of sale or release which they are now ready to make, so that the dean and chapter may cause the 200 marks to be paid for the said pension at a place named. He asks the abbot to reply by his messenger. Since it is troublesome and very expensive both to them and the abbot to send messengers to and from on this business, Nicholas notes that they have for some time had the said 200 marks ready for buying the said pension, and still have them; but unless the abbot fulfils his promises in this behalf more quickly, he shall arrange to turn the money to another use in the interest of his church.
