William, bishop of St Andrews, and William de Soules, knight, to King Edward I of England; write informing him that they have shown to King Alexander III letters of safe conduct by King Edward and his magnates. Alexander desires to come to him and do his pleasure in reason. It would greatly satisfy people of Scotland if he had usual safe conduct of English magnates, or at least king's letter, that his coming to England should not hereafter injure him or his heirs. Wherefore the bishop and William de Soules beseech King Edward to deign to transmit to them aforesaid conduct or letter granting therein that king of Scotland shall go wherever he pleases in England, and that his escort may be archbishops of Canterbury and York, and earls of Gloucester, Warenne and Lincoln, whom he desires to have.
