- King William informs his faithful men that he has granted to King John, his ‘well-beloved lord’, the marriage of his son Alexander, ‘as his liegeman’, within six years after Ash Wednesday in the thirteenth year of John [8 February 1212] and at John’s discretion, provided that Alexander not be disparaged. He has also granted to his lord John, king of England, he and his son Alexander will maintain faith and fealty to his son Henry as their liege lord, and will help him and support him in his realm, reserving the faith they owe King John. He and Alexander swore to this touching the Holy Gospels, and he has affixed his seal, along with the seals of William, bishop of St Andrews, Walter, bishop of Glasgow, John, bishop-elect of Dunkeld, Earl Patrick, Alan son of Roland the constable, Philip [?] de Mowbray, and Walter Olifard. Alexander will affix his seal when he has been knighted.

- Stones, Barrow and Duncan all accept the palaeography of this document is an English chancery hand of perhaps 20-40 years after its purported date. This deserves a fresh appraisal.
