Philip II, king of France (d.1223)
- Biography
- Philip, born on 22 or 25 August 1165, was the son of King Louis VII of France and Alix de Champagne. He succeeded to the throne on 18 September 1180. His first marriage was to Isabella of Hainault (d.1190), niece of the count of Flanders, while he married secondly Ingeburga, sister of King Canute VI of Denmark, in 1193, whom he divorced and imprisoned shortly afterwards. He married thirdly Agnes de Méran (d.1201), the daughter of a Bavarian nobleman, by whom he had two children. In 1213, he took back Ingeburga, who had long appealed the divorce, as his queen. He died at Mantes on 14 July 1223, and was succeeded by his son, Louis VIII. G. Goyau, "Philip II (Augustus)," The Catholic Encyclopedia (1911), xii, [http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/12001a.htm]
