Kelly, Oxford Dictionary of Popes, 202-03: Martin was born Simon de Brie at Brie (Seine-et-Marne). He was archdeacon and chancellor of Rouen, then treasurer of St Martin in Tours; in 1260 he became chancellor of France under Louis IX and was created cardinal-priest of Santa Cecilia in December 1262. He was legate in France. Martin was elected pope at Viterbo on 22 February 1281 and was crowned at Orvieto on 23 March. He died at Perugia on 28 March 1285.
