Bernard Balliol (d.1154×62)
- Biography
- Bernard (I) Balliol succeeded as head of the Balliol family between 1130 and 1133 after the death of his uncle, Guy. He was the eldest son of Hugh, lord of Bailleul, and had at least four younger brothers - Ralph, Ingram, Hugh (d.c.1181), Jocelin - and another, William, might have been possible. He married Maud, by whom he had four sons - Ingram (d.a.1152/3), Guy (d.a.1162), Eustace (d.a.1171), Bernard (d.c.1190)- and one daughter, Hawise. The family originate from Bailleul-en-Vimeu, Picardy, and were present in England by the 1090s. Bernard's main landholding was in County Durham, where Barnard Castle had been built, probably commissioned by him. He fought at the Battle of the Standard in 1138 against David I. After Bernard's death, his youngest son, Bernard (II) succeeded to the vast estates. A. Beam, The Balliol Dynasty, 1210-1364 (Edinburgh, 2008); G.P. Stell, 'Bernard de Balliol', ODNB, iii, 600-601;
