Alexander is described as persona of 'Mualt'. This is likely to simply be the surname de Muhaut, with the church of his parsonage not named, although it is just possible that the he was parson of Mold, Flintshire, whence the family named derived. A more likely option was that he was persona of Kinnettles ANG, a church whose right of patronage the family controlled later in the 13th century.
Alexander later is described as a clerk of Bishop Ralph of Brechin and both a clerk and chaplain of Bishop Hugh of Brechin, but D.E.R. Watt believed that the single description of Alexander as Magister was an error. Watt, _Graduates_, 423.
Alexander de Muhaut appears exclusively in the context of the counties of Angus and Kincardine.
