Thomas, earl of Mar (d. 1373x74)

Biography
Thomas was the son of Donald, earl of Mar and an Isabel Stewart, thought to be the daughter of Alexander Stewart of Bunkle. Thomas was probably born c.1330 and may, for a while, have been in the care of his English stepfather William Carsewell (Isabel’s third husband). Nothing else is known of his childhood and he next appeared as an adult earl of Mar on 15 May 1350, witnessing a charter by David II. In 1357 he was a hostage for the payment of David II's ransom but had returned to Scotland by 1358 where he briefly occupied the office of chamberlain 1358-9. On 24 February 1360 he concluded an agreement for military service with Edward III, excepting his allegiance to the king of Scots. It may have been as a reaction to this arrangement that David II mounted a siege of Mar’s fortress of Kildrummy in 1361, installed a new keeper, and imposed a large fine on Earl Thomas. Kildrummy was returned to the earl before August 1368. He died in early 1377. Thomas was twice married. The first match was with Margaret, daughter of John Graham, earl of Menteith. He divorced Graham and then married Margaret Stewart, eldest daughter of Thomas Stewart, earl of Angus who outlived him.
