Richard Marsh, bishop of Durham (d.1226)
- Biography
- Richard Marsh (de Marisco), was styled master and first appears in records in 1196/97. By 1207 he had become a chamber clerk and from 1209, senior chancery clerk. He held many other ecclesiastical offices. In 1209, became canon of Exeter and rector of Bampton, Oxfordshire and by November 1211 he was archdeacon of Northumberland. In 1212 he was appointed to the vicarage of Kempsey, Worcestershire, and in February 1213 he became archdeacon of Richmond. Richard was in Rome in August 1213 and left for Rome again in February 1214 and upon his return, left for Poitou, returning to England by June 1214. On 29 October 1214, he was appointed chancellor of England. He was again in Poitou in August 1215 and in September went again to Rome. He left the court to become bishop of Durham in 1217, being consecrated on 2 July by Archbishop Gray of York. Richard served as justice on eyre in Yorkshire and Northumberland from December 1218 or April 1219. He remained titular chancellor until his death. He died suddenly in his sleep at Peterborough Abbey on 1 May 1226. His heir was his nephew, Adam Marsh (d.1259).
