Robert Grosseteste, bishop of Lincoln (d.1253)
- Biography
- Robert Grosseteste was born to a poor family from Suffolk and spent his early years at school in Lincoln and then Cambridge and first appears around 1190. Around 1196, he is found in the household of William de Vere, bishop of Hereford. He was perhaps employed by Hugh Foliot, archdeacon of Shropshire and later bishop of Hereford, as the two were papal judges-delegate between 1214 and 1216. He was appointed rector of Abbotsley, Huntingdonshire, in 1225 and Robert also taught at Oxford during this time, being appointed chancellor there for a year around 1228-30. In 1229, he was appointed archdeacon of Leicester. He gave up his position at Leicester and Abbotsley in 1231 to become a lector to a Franciscan community outside Oxford, where he remained until 1235. He was consecrated bishop of Lincoln on 17 June 1235. He attended the General Council at Lyons in 1245 and was at the papal curia again in 1250. He died on 9 October 1253 at Buckden and was buried in Lincoln Cathedral. R.W. Southern, 'Robert Grosseteste', ODNB, xxiv, 79-86; [http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/11665]
