Eleanor of Castile, queen of England (d.1290)

Biography
Eleanor of Castile was born in 1241, the daughter of Ferdinand III of Castile (d.1252) and his second wife, Jeanne de Dammartin (d.1279), heir to the French county of Ponthieu. She had a half-brother. Eleanor married Edward I of England the convent of Las Huelgas near Burgos on 1 November 1254. She travelled abroad with Edward frequently, including between 1260 and 1263 in France and from 1270 when Edward went on crusade. The couple were crowned together on 19 August 1274, two years after the death of King Henry III. In 1279, she succeeded to Ponthieu, which would be passed on to her son, Edward, in 1290. With Edward I, she had sixteen children, though only six survived into adulthood: Eleanor (d.1297), who married Henry, count of Bar; Joan of Acre (d.1307), who married Gilbert, earl of Gloucester, then Ralph de Monthermer; Margaret (d.1318), who married John, duke of Brabant; Mary (d.1332), Elizabeth (d.1316), who married John, count of Holland, then Humphrey de Bohun, earl of Hereford; and Edward (d. 1327, later King Edward II) who married Isabella of France. The names of five other children are known: John (d.1271), Henry (d.1274), Isabel, Alfonso (d.1284), and Berengaria (d.1276). Eleanor founded several Dominican houses in England. In 1287 she contracted 'quartan' fever while in Aquitaine with Edward, and later died of the fever at Harby, near Lincoln, on 28 November 1290. She was buried at Westminster on 17 December. Her heart was buried in the Dominican church of London and her viscera in Lincoln Cathedral. J.C.
