William of Roos of Hamelake (d.1316)
- Biography
- Eldest son of Sir Robert de Ros (d.1285), lord of Helmsley in Yorkshire, and Isabel (d.1301), daughter and heir of William d'Aubigny, lord of Belvoir. Born c.1255; competitor for Scottish Crown in 1291/2, being descended from Isabella, illegitimate daughter of William I, who had married Robert de Ros (d. 1226/7), his great-grandfather, in 1191;
Cousin of Robert de Ros, who held Wark castle from him. This Robert sided with the Scots in 1296 and had a brother, William de Ros of Kendal.
Was present at Falkirk (1298) and campaign of 1300; joint warden of Northumberland from Nov. 1307 with Robert de Umfraville, earl of Angus; joint lieutenant and warden of Scotland with Umfraville from 21 June 1308.
Married Matilda (d.1301), daughter and coheir of John de Vaux of Steresby in Yorkshire and with her had three children: William (d.1363), John (d.1338) (who succeeded him), and Anne.
