- This charter states that a Ralph of Morpeth held a toft in Crail. It is worth noting that Ralph de Merlay was lord of Morpeth, Northumberland, in 1138, and married Juliana, a daughter of Earl Gospatrick of Dunbar, and his grandson, Roger de Merlay II, married Ada, daughter of Earl Donnchad II of Fife, before 1188. (Hedley, Northumberland Families, I, 197-8). A witness to this charter, Robert of Newham, is also perhaps from Northumberland.
