Description
Walter de Bolbec son of Walter de Bolbec, at the petition and assent of Hugh de Bolbec, his brother and heir, has given, granted and by this his present charter established in perpetuity to William and Roger, monks of the order of Kelso, a certain hermitage called ‘Merchingley’, founded in the wasteland of his father and him, next to ‘Merchingburn’ (Marchburn) with the church of St Mary, in free, pure and perpetual alms, by stated bounds, which, if one of the aforesaid monks dies, he has given, granted and by this his present charter established to that other one of the hermitage of ‘Merchingley’. After the death of both monks, Walter and Roger, he has given, granted and by this his present charter established the hermitage of ‘Merchingley’ with the church of St Mary, in perpetuity, to one monk or two of the habit of the order of Kelso.
