Description
Abbot Ralph and convent of Arbroath notifies that since land of Lownie (ANG), which belonged to Walter, son of Turpin, and his ancestors by hereditary right, was profitable and necessary to their uses on account of various easements and was bordered by land of Dunnichen (ANG), Walter, at instance of Arbroath Abbey and by common counsel of friends, granted and quitclaimed to Arbroath land in perpetuity whereby abbot, for this concession and quitclaim, has given in exchange land of Little Kenny (ANG) towards west in shire of Kingoldrum (ANG), to hold in perpetuity with his native men of Little Kenny with men's remaining 'merchet' and 'blood-wite' and quitclaim of multure of abbey and all other rights, except forinsec service to king for land. Walter shall render annually to abbey one pound of pepper or 12d. at Pentecost. In addition, abbot also has granted liberties and licence of common fuel and common pasture in shire of Kingoldrum. Arbroath shall promise in good faith that they will warrant land to Walter by marches which G[ilbert], their abbot of good memory, E. [sic R.] de Lamley, former prior, Clement and Jordan, monks of Arbroath, H[ugh of] Cameron, sheriff of Forfar, Ralph of Strachan and others perambulated.
