Document 1/7/34 (RRS, iii, no. 34)

Description
King Alexander II makes known that Abbot Gilbert and monks of Arbroath have, at king's request, freely granted that their men inhabiting abbey's tofts in king's burghs were to contribute with his burgesses to an aid in hides, which he sold in England in his great necessity when he marched to Dover. He wishes that this aid shall not create a precedent against liberty which king, his father, gave to abbey by his charter.
