Watt and Murray, Fasti, 78: John appears as bishop of Caithness 1185×89 and probably 1187×89. He was in office possibly on 27 May 1198 and might have remained in office after he was attacked and mutilated by Lumberd and other men of Harald, earl of Caithness, in early September 1202.
