Gilbert, bishop of Whithorn (d.1253)

Biography
Watt and Murray, Fasti, 169: Gilbert was a monk of Melrose when he was elected to the bishopric of Whithorn on 25 February 1235. The election was contested by the prior and convent, who had elected Odo, a canon of Whithorn, to the bishopric on 11 March 1235. Gilbert's election was upheld and he was consecrated at York on 2 September 1235. He died in 1253, after 22 June and perhaps after 24 August. Gilbert resigned his office as abbot of Glenluce to become a monk at Melrose Abbey, where he rose to become the master of the abbey’s novices. (Chron. Mel.)
