William Comyn (d.c.1160)

Biography
William was perhaps from Bosc-Bernard-Commin, near Rouen, and is first mentioned around 1121. He was a pupil of Geoffrey Rufus, chancellor of England and bishop of Durham. He became archdeacon of Worcester shortly after 1125 and was made chancellor of Scotland by 1136. He recovered the archdeaconry of Worcester by 1156-7, following a lengthy dispute concerning his claims to the bishopric of Durham, but was no longer archdeacon by 1161 and had perhaps died around 1160. He had four nephews: William, Richard, Walter and Osbert. (Young, The Comyns, 14-30) Fasti Ecclesiae Anglicanae, 1066-1300, ii, 105-107: William was probably appointed archdeacon of Worcester after the death of Hugh, archdeacon of the diocese of Worcester, in March 1125. He was bishop-elect of Durham around May 1141, but was deprived of all his benefices around March 1143 and excommunicated. By 1152 he was restored to some of his benefices and probably died around 1158×59
