Abel of Gullane, bishop of St Andrews (d.1254)

Biography
Watt and Murray, Fasti, 380, 394: Abel was archdeacon of St Andrews, occurring on 12 May 1250 and 27 June 1252. He contested the election of Robert de Stuteville to the bishopric of St Andrews and went to the papal curia where he received a provision for himself on 20 February 1254. He was consecrated by the pope on 1 March 1254. He occurs at St Andrews on 29 June 1254 and died that year, perhaps on 31 August, according to the chronicler of Lanercost, rather than Walter Bower's date of 1 December. Abel was also a clerk of Kelso, papal chaplain, and canon of Glasgow. He was the son of a priest. Abel was sent with envoys of King Alexander III to Rome during the appeal over the disputed election to the bishopric of St. Andrews after the death of David of Bernham (d.1253). Abel was consecrated bishop in Rome by Pope Innocent IV, and returned to Scotland where he met some opposition but later with the consent of the king’s council. He died in the same year. (Chron. Mel.)
