Lucius II, pope (d.1145)

Biography
Kelly, Oxford Dictionary of Popes, 171-72: Lucius, born Gherardo Caccianemici at Bologna, was a canon of S. Frediano, Lucca. He was made cardinal-priest of Santa Croce in 1124 and was papal legate to Germany from 1125-26, 1130-31, 1133-34, and 1136. He was rector of Benevento in 1130. He was appointed papal chancellor and librarian by Innocent II. He was elected and consecrated as pope at Rome on 12 March 1144. Lucius led an unsuccessful assault on the Capitol where he was injured and died from his wounds on 15 February 1145 at S Gregorio al Celia.
