Seal-Matrix: Eustace de Vescy (d.1216)

Owner
Eustace de Vescy (d.1216)
Matrix Shape
round
Image description (obverse)
Single-sided seal depicting an ornamental device of ears of corn and vetch pods, the latter a pun on ‘Vescy’, between two peacocks. The upper part of the seal bears the impression of an oval antique *intaglio* gem engraved with a galley sailing, a water-horse or sea-dragon, and a dolphin; this impression was apparently made from a ring, and was not part of the matrix itself.
